Jesus Loves Me in My Mess

Life has a way of getting messy. Our homes become cluttered, our schedules become packed, and our relationships become complicated. Then one day, you don’t like what life has become. You feel stuck in habits you swore you’d break and surrounded by problems that feel too tangled to fix. But here’s the truth: Jesus not only loves you in the mess, but He can save you from the mess.

In Luke 15, Jesus tells the story of a lost son, famously known as the Prodigal Son. He took his inheritance early and wasted it all on wild living. Soon, he was broke, hungry, and alone, and took on a job feeding pigs just to survive. At the time, that was about as low as you could go. And then something powerful happened.

Luke writes, “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!’” (Luke 15:17 NLT)

That’s what happens when grace starts to break through: you come to your senses. You see things as they really are. You realize you don’t have to stay where you are. You can always come home. It’s no fun to hit rock bottom, but when you come to your senses, rock bottom can become the bedrock for your comeback.

I’ve been there myself. At seventeen, I was lost in addiction. I had disappointed my family, nearly failed out of school, and was burning every bridge I had. One day, I dropped to my knees and asked God for help. It wasn’t fancy, but it was real. And God met me there. He began rebuilding what I had torn down.

When the prodigal son came home, he expected rejection. He even rehearsed a speech that began: “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.” (Luke 15:21 NLT). But his father saw him from far away and ran to him.

Luke 15:20 (NLT) says, “Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”

That’s how God loves you. He doesn’t wait for you to clean up first. He runs toward you with compassion. You might have given up on yourself, but God never has and He never will. He’s not interested in punishing your past; He’s ready to redeem your future.

Maybe your mess feels impossible. Maybe you’ve made mistakes that seem too heavy to fix. But the love of Jesus is stronger than your worst day. He meets you in the middle of it–not to shame you, but to lift you up. When you return to God, He runs to you.

You may have forgotten your value, but God hasn’t. He doesn’t give you what you deserve because He’d rather put you where you belong–in His family, doing His work, and sharing in His blessings. Jesus loves you in your mess.

Reflect

  1. What area of your life feels “messy” right now? What might it look like to invite Jesus into it?
  2. How has God shown you love and grace in the middle of your own mistakes or failures?
